A Postcard A Day - Tuesday 9 May 2017 - owl mug and dancing and skipping women

Today (as every Tuesday) I'm going to join Elizabeth and Bluebeard at Altered Book Lover for the weekly T-party. Post anything with a drink in it and you can join us!

I post my postcards that I receive or send through Postcrossing and today I have a postcard with a drink in it! How cool is that!
It was sent to me by Leslie who lives on an island on the Gulf Coast (USA). The card shows a self portrait of the artist Karolina Pietón, who is Polish as far as I can make out.
I love that little owl mug on top of a pile of books. What is in the mug?Green tea, chocolate? Or .coffee or just some lemon water? What is she clutching? A hot water bottle? or a painter's palette? A just a cushion? who knows. Anyway. I like this card very much.

On Thursday I went on an outing/ walk with the women's association of the village.
Outside the village is an old sugar factory (see photo) that was built after Spain 'lost' Cuba and had no access to sugar. It has been abandoned since the 70s, but it is very beautiful in its own sort of way. Industrial heritage I think it is called.

We walked to an old iron bridge outside the village:
More industrial heritage I suppose as it is no longer used. The railway has been abandoned too. Here is another photo:

One of the ladies had come with her Landrover and brought a table and stuff to eat and drink. Here we are having our breakfast:

She is cutting up some sweetbread from the local baker:
And there were lots of broad beans/fava beans:
Fresh from the fields, picked that morning. They are so fresh that one can eat them raw! Just peel them and enjoy:
One of the ladies teaches pilates and she did a session with us.

We did smaller walks from the bridge. One walk was to the old station (which has been restored recently). Some ladies started to sing and spontaneously people began to dance:
Old folk dances are still alive and kicking in the place.

I took a photo of this irrigation canal. They are called acequias and have been used since pre christian times. The moors introduced this web of canals, that work on gravity. Very clever system. It is widely used to this day. I should have put my bag next to it to show you the scale... the canal is about less than a foot wide.
Lunch was bread (baguette/stick bread) with salami and cheese and fish. This is cured mackrel. Very yummy.

In the afternoon we played games like 'tug-of-war':
And we had great fun skipping, using the rope from the tug of war:
And of course we played cards in small groups. I was invited (and taught) to play a card game called 'chinchon':
The cards they use are Napolitan cards like they use in Italy.
I really enjoyed myself. It was such a fun day!  I hope you enjoyed looking at the photos.

Happy T-Day all!,
Hugs,
Lisca

  3. I don't know what postcrossing is, but it's very cool that you received a postcard with a drink in it for our T-party! The owl mug and postcard are darling.

A lot of "industrial heritage" on your walk. lol. What a delightful group of ladies - freshly baked sweetbread, a Pilates class, spontaneous dancing ... and on and on ... what a fun outing you shared today, Lisca. Thank you.

    Happy T-Day! Hugs, Eileen

  4. I was really impressed with the beautiful post card. It is truly lovely. I love the original style painting, too. I think she is clutching an owl pillow. At least, that's what it looked like to me when I enlarged it. I thought it went well with the owl on the mug.

Sounds like you ladies made a BIG day of it, with your walk, your Pilates, your dancing, tugs of war, skipping rope, and EATING!!

The breakfast sounds wonderful, and the fava beans look tempting enough to eat through my screen. But I'll let you have the mackerel. It's a bit too fishy for me. BTW, I've never seen chocolate in a juice box before. I bet it was wonderful.

Thanks for sharing your day of bonding and fun, your wonderful postcard, and your chocolate juice boxes with us for T this Tuesday. That is definitely a new one for me.

  11. I though the girl in the postcard was holding a stuffed owl or there was an owl on her sweater. Your day looked amazing. Good food, company, and lots of fun. Happy T Day

  12. I love your post card! Your day out looks so much fun! I love smoked mackerel but not so keen on broad beans - but I have never tried them raw - maybe I should! We use a 2 for I ticket for the cinema so it is quite a bargain. sometimes we go to Silver Screen showing which is for over 55's - usually the films are about 4-6months behind their original showing date, but at £3 each and coffee and biscuit included it is a better bargain still - these showings are at 11 and 2 on Tuedsays and Thursdays swapping times for different films on the 2 days. Of course we don't take food to those - in fact we only took food this time because the film we wanted to see was at lunch time and being diabetic I had to eat(which we did when we got in while the adverts were on) Happy T Day, Chrisx

  13. you seemed to have a great day out! an interesting post really!
lisca, you asked for the millet: i use it the same way as quinoa or Couscous. cooking with 1:2 seed:water/vegetable stock. you could also use it for sweet dish, but actually i always make it spicy. i welcome These variations and they have quite some Minerals.
    happy belated t-day!

  14. what a delightful day this must have been! So fun and wonderful to see you ladies 'playing' outside...even skipping rope. I haven't done that since grade school, and I am always up for a game of cards. Which is not to say that I'm good at it, but I like to try. The old bridge and factory are intriguing and I think I might like to draw that bridge...love the postcard, very unique! happy T day! ♥

  16. Love teh postcard and look like you had a fantastic day out with the ladies!!! Thanks for stopping by my blog. The straw bale gardening is a new tend in gardening that is rapidly spreading here in the USA . It works well if you have limited space, bad soil (my case) or just want to try a different method. I will be posting about it all summer.
